You Choose Gameboard Set For beginners (children 3+ years).
(As Children grow and learn bring out the game again and again and move on to the next level when the time is right)...
- begin with Colours & Shapes without the dice. Each player takes it in turn to choose an Answerblock and place it in its correct position on the board, in much the same way as doing a jigsaw puzzle. (Encourage saying the Colours and Shapes as they are being placed for word recognition).
· Move on to Shapes & Numbers and play in the same way.
· Incorporate Scoring by having the children take the score tile that relates to the position on the board that they have filled (one, two or three ‘ticks’). Children will begin to assess which of their Answerblocks to choose so that they get the most points from their turn.
· Once children have mastered this, move on again by adding the dice (3+ years – the dice are a choking hazard for children under 3 years).
They now have the fundamentals of how all of the games are played. The whole family can play together because the luck of the dice dictates a players choices (or produces a free choice – rolling a ‘Double’).
· Turn the edge blocks to show the words for the shapes and colours to facilitate word recognition (You can begin this version by changing one edge block at a time).
Once children are beginning to learn basic maths at primary school the time is right to...
· Move on to Addition, and then...
· Move on to Multiplication
· If older children want to play addition or multiplication, allow younger children to use the instructions booklet with the answers on the back page so that they can still participate. They may soon be remembering answers all by themselves - learning through play.
· If children want to play with you but you’re busy preparing dinner or doing other chores, ask them to roll the dice for your turn and call out your choices for you. Once you have told them which combination you want to play they can place it themselves and then it’s their turn again.
We made the game using numbers 1 – 6 because we felt that 1 – 10 (being 100 answerblocks) was a little too daunting for young children. We are currently working on a 7 through to 10 ‘extension kit’ to the You Choose Gameboard set and hope to have this available later in the year.
